Abstract:

Pancreatitis can cause some of the most severe inflammatory pain, yet we still know little about how an inflamed pancreas signals distress to the nervous system. This gap has limited the development of non-opioid treatments that target the biological source of pain. This project will bring together expertise in pancreatitis biology and systems neuroscience to build a new experimental platform for studying these processes in a living vertebrate. We will leverage the transparency of larval zebrafish to develop methods to induce pancreatitis and simultaneously monitor, in intact animals, how individual cells of the immune and nervous systems respond to it. This work will reveal how an injured and inflamed pancreas communicates with the nervous system, enabling the identification of the relevant neuronal subpopulations that a treatment should target to alleviate symptoms.
