Interdisciplinary Initiatives Program Round 13 - 2026
Project Investigators:
Frank Willett, Neurosurgery
Cory Shain, Linguistics
Abstract:
Many people with cerebral palsy (CP) have severe motor impairments that make speech difficult or impossible, leaving them dependent on slow communication methods such as eye tracking. In this project, we will pilot the first implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) for people with CP. Although the nonspeaking CP population is roughly ten times larger than the ALS population in which speech BCIs were first developed, BCI research for CP currently lags far behind. We will address this unmet need by (1) developing new neuroimaging protocols for targeting speech and language related brain regions in people with CP whose motor circuitry may be altered by injury (PI: Shain), and (2) using these protocols to implant microelectrode arrays in a person with CP for the first time to test the feasibility of a speech brain-computer interface (PI: Willett). This preliminary data will support an R01 for speech BCIs in CP at scale.
