The Sapp Family CS Bio-X Undergraduate Summer Research Program (USRP) provides an immersive ten-week full-time hands-on experience in the lab that is enhanced by weekly faculty talks, workshops, and other events, creating a supportive community helping to develop our students into scientific researchers. All levels of research experience are welcome! We highly encourage first-time researchers who have not had hands-on lab experience to apply.

Over 1000 undergraduate students have participated in the Bio-X USRP since 2006. Many of our alumni have gone on to pursue a PhD or MD, published in high-impact journals, received prestigious awards, and accepted exciting positions in industry. Some have started their own companies and/or have become faculty members at numerous institutions including Stanford. Countless participants have indicated that the Bio-X USRP experience changed the course of their time at Stanford and influenced their future careers.

Application

  • The application may be completed by the student or faculty mentor after they have collaborated and agreed on a project.
  • The faculty mentor must email their confirmation of mentorship by the application deadline for the application to be considered.
  • The proposal must be for full-time effort (35+ hours per week) on-campus hands-on lab work. Remote plans will not be considered.
  • In the application, you will be asked to describe the project in 100 words, explain how it is interdisciplinary, and identify a direct mentor.
  • Preference will be given to projects which are interdisciplinary in nature and are explicit in the methods (knowledge, techniques, or other skills) that the student would learn during the 10 weeks.

Eligibility

  • The Stanford undergraduate student may come from any department on campus.
  • Co-terms who have not conferred their undergraduate degree may apply. Students paying graduate tuition during or before Summer 2025 are ineligible.
  • The faculty mentor must be a Bio-X affiliated faculty member (cannot be consulting faculty). A list of Bio-X affiliated faculty may be found here. To become a Bio-X faculty affiliate, please email us.

Program Commitments

  • The entire program requires in-person participation. To accept the award, students are required to confirm full in-person participation in faculty talks, enrichment events, and poster session. Students will be given ample advance notice of the schedule to ensure they work with their faculty mentor to prioritize these commitments.
  • Exceptions to participating in an event are not at the faculty mentor's discretion; these must be discussed with Bio-X program administrators prior to making any arrangements.
  • Additional commitments cannot conflict with Bio-X programming; if taking an additional internship, job, or volunteer position, it cannot occur during work hours.

Stanford Bio-X reserves the right to rescind funding at any given point should they be apprised of any policy violations as outlined above or if the commitment to our summer programming is not met.
