Broadly, Dr. Derick Okwan lab’s primary interest is to understand how and why the immune system contributes to nearly all chronic diseases. The immune system of the modern human has evolved from a history of stress to the species: famines, continual bouts of lethal pandemics, as well as major climate/environmental and migratory changes that exposed the immune system to novel threats. 

Dr. Dita Gratzinger is a hematopathologist who is dedicated to excellent patient care, to educating the hematopathologists of tomorrow, and to improving both by harnessing strengths across institutional and disciplinary lines. Dr. Gratzinger studies the architecture of supporting cells in the microenvironment as well as diagnosis of lymphoma on small volume specimens, and has a special interest in the role of patient-specific factors in manifestation of hematolymphoid disease, including immunodeficiency and dysregulation-related lymphoid proliferations.

Dr. Emily Chan is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Stanford University. She completed her MD, PhD at New York University and Anatomic Pathology residency with subspecialty Genitourinary Pathology training at University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). She is AP board-certified. Dr. Chan was a GU attending at UCSF for five years before joining Stanford to lead the Genitourinary Pathology Service and Fellowship. She has successfully mentored numerous trainees in projects, publications, and career planning. Dr.

Dr. Nazish Sayed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, and The Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Dr. Sayed received his MD from the University of Mumbai, India, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers New Jersey Medical School). He also holds a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from Montclair State University.

Dr. Tian Yi Zhang is a board-certified hematologist. She is also an assistant professor of hematology at Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition to her medical degree, she holds a PhD in cellular and molecular immunology.

In her clinical practice, she treats patients with all forms of hematological malignancies, offering specialized expertise in acute myeloid leukemia, including therapy-resistant cases. For each patient, she develops a personalized care plan encompassing novel treatment options.

Dr. Matt Hernandez received his MD/PhD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in New York City. His graduate work focused on viral-host interactions and tracing HIV evolution in vivo using genomic tools. During his training, he applied his skills to the clinical laboratory and helped found the ISMMS Personalized Virology Initiative.

Dr. Hong Song received his MD from Tulane University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University. He performed research in targeted radionuclide therapy as a postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins University. Following medical school, he joined Dual pathway Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology residency at Stanford. 

Dr. Louise Sun is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and Director of Cardiovascular Research. She is an Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) in Toronto. Prior to this, she was an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Epidemiology, Director of Big Data and Health Bioinformatics Research at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and a Clinical Research Chair in Big Data and Cardiovascular Outcomes at the University of Ottawa. 

Dr. Md Tauhidul Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University. He leads a research program focused on developing advanced AI methodologies for biomedical data analysis, including medical imaging, multi-omics data integration, and human-centered machine learning frameworks for scientific discovery.

Dr. John Mitchell is the Mary and Gordon Crary Family Professor, professor of computer science, and by courtesy professor of electrical engineering and professor of education. He was previously Stanford Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and chair of the Computer Science Department. As vice provost, his team worked with more than 500 Stanford faculty members and instructors on over 1,000 online projects for campus or public audiences and organized the Year of Learning to envision the future of teaching and learning at Stanford and beyond.
