“Novel 3D Structures for a Higher Resolution Subretinal Prosthesis"

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, affecting nearly 20 million patients worldwide. Photovoltaic subretinal prosthesis developed in Palanker’s lab at Stanford successfully provides central vision to AMD patients, with resolution limited by its 100um pixel size. To achieve higher resolution, these devices require smaller pixels, yet they should maintain the same stimulation strength as the current larger pixels. Jeonghyun’s project will focus on developing 3-dimensional structures for the retinal prosthesis to enable a deeper penetration of the electric field into the retinal layers while maintaining high contrast and selectivity of the neural stimulation in the retina.
