“Identification of Uremic Solutes Derived from Colon Microbes"

Half a million U.S. adults are maintained on dialysis to remove waste chemicals from their bodies because their kidneys have failed. Many of these waste chemicals are produced by microbes which typically live in the large intestine. Research at Stanford has identified new chemicals made by these microbes. Arin’s project uses the analytic techniques of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine the extent to which certain waste chemicals accumulate in the blood and are removed by dialysis following kidney failure. His research contributes insights towards potential treatments that could suppress waste production by colon microbes and thereby improve the health of dialysis patients.
