"GLP-1–Based Modulation of Gastric Emptying and Insulin Secretion in Post-Bariatric Hypoglycemia"

For many people, bariatric surgery is life-changing, helping control obesity and diabetes. But for some, it leads to frequent drops in blood sugar, known as post-bariatric hypoglycemia. These episodes can be frightening and disruptive. There are currently no approved treatments for this. Samson’s project builds on evidence that these patients move food through the stomach unusually fast, triggering an overrelease of gut hormones and insulin. Samson will study whether commonly used GLP-1 medications can slow this process and improve blood sugar control using stomach imaging and standardized meal tests. Understanding who benefits, and why, could lead to new targeted treatments and better outcomes for patients.
