Headshot portrait of Jorg Goronzy - Professor of Medicine (Immunology & Rheumatology), Emeritus
Bio-X Affiliated Faculty

Dr. Jörg J. Goronzy specializes in the treatment of immunological and rheumatic diseases with an expertise in the care of patients with giant cell arteritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Before coming to Stanford in 2009, he was the Mason I. Lowance, M.D. Professor of Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta. From 1990 to 2003, he was on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic.

The Goronzy lab is interested in understanding how a functional immune system is maintained with age, despite failing regenerative capacity and accumulating impacts by challenges from exogenous and latent infections. They study mechanisms, at the system as well as the single cell level, that contribute to declining immunity and to the higher frequency of some autoimmune diseases with age. They primarily work with human blood specimens or cell lines. Ultimately, they are trying to identify molecular pathways that can be targeted to improve immune function in advanced age.
