Dr. Weinacht's laboratory has two areas of interest. Studies conducted in the lab aim to understand how defects in mitochondrial metabolism and increased oxidative stress lead to impaired hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell development. Dr. Weinacht's group is interested in understanding the pathways involved in mitochondrial permeability transition and cell death as well as their pharmacologic manipulation with small molecules. The second focus of the laboratory explores the potential of in vitro-derived thymic epithelial progenitor cells as a stem cell-based therapy for immune dysfunction in children affected by DiGeorge (Del22q11)-Syndrome.
