“Investigating the Underlying Causes of Normal Weight Diabetes in Asian Populations"

Normal weight diabetes (NWD) is prevalent in Asian populations. While insulin resistance contributes to obese diabetes, with weight loss-directed therapies as first-line treatment, the pathophysiology of NWD is less understood and may involve factors like inflammation, altered fat distribution, and genetic predisposition. Marjorie’s project hypothesizes that NWD represents a heterogeneous group, and identifying its underlying causes can inform targeted treatments, advancing precision medicine in this high-risk population. Marjorie will join a new study on NWD and prediabetes, performing metabolic tests and imaging and testing interventions as part of the ADVANCE team, with patient interactions and data analysis opportunities.
