Dr. Long received her undergraduate degree from Caltech, and carried out her PhD studies at Yale, working with Ian Sussex on plant development. She was a postdoc with Fred Ausubel where she began study of rhizobia-legume symbioses. She joined the Stanford faculty in 1982.

The laboratory's focus is in biochemistry, genetics and cell biology of plant-bacterial symbiosis.
