Research Title: Computational modeling of high intensity focused ultrasound therapies

Research Description: Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) is used to treat a variety of conditions. It is a safe, non-invasive, and effective method for ablating undesirable tissues. In certain cases, the presence of bone distorts the ultrasound waves. This alters the location, shape, and intensity of the focal spot. To understand how to compensate for the distortions, Steve uses simulations to model the complex propagation of ultrasound in the patient anatomy. He will use these simulations to obtain compensation parameters for recovery of the focal spot. He will also improve upon his existing model in order to account for intra-patient variability and to reduce computation time.
