Dr. Gilly has contributed to understanding electrical excitability of nerve and muscle in organisms ranging from brittle-stars to mammals, often using the squid giant axon as a model system. He is currently working on behavior, physiology and ecology of Dosidicus gigas and Doryteuthis opalescens in the Gulf of CA and Monterey Bay. Electronic tagging and acoustic methods are used to track vertical and horizontal movements and to estimate biomass. Lab focuses on hypoxia tolerance, control of chromatophores and jet propulsion.
