“Investigating the Impact of S1P Receptor Modulators on Cognitive Outcomes Across Stages of Multiple Sclerosis"

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an incurable condition in which the immune system attacks neurons’ myelin sheaths, thereby causing vision, movement, and sensory problems. Its onset is unpredictable, but many patients experience cognitive decline years before diagnosis. In this time, the condition may progress without treatment as irremediable brain lesions form. Therefore, Zainab’s project explores molecular pathways underlying MS to uncover their relation to cognition, and if relevant biomarkers can be used for earlier diagnosis. The signaling pathway of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) will be studied due to its role in the myelination of neurons and pharmaceuticals that may alleviate cognitive decline in MS.
