Research Title: Radiation therapy treatment planning using convex optimization

Research Description: Radiation therapy is one of the primary treatment modalities for cancer: about two-thirds of cancer patients are treated by a radiation oncologist. Advances in radiation beam hardware have led to treatment systems with high control over the shape of the dose delivered to the patient, but optimizing this shape to minimize damage to healthy tissue remains a large, computationally challenging problem. Baris proposes to apply state-of-the-art techniques from the field of mathematical optimization, guided by analysis of previously delivered treatment plans, to develop algorithms that will generate clinically superior treatment plans that harness the full capability of modern treatment systems.
